I’m on Christmas Island. I am still on Christmas Island. While nothing is wrong with the island itself, originally we had planned to abandon it for some days on Cocos/Keeling. However, Virgin Australia didn’t co-operate.
I knew that flights between mainland Australia and the islands are cancelled frequently, and there was some risk involved. Maybe I was too optimistic when I booked this trip….
Anyway. Better to be stuck on Xmas, where we can catch our flight back to Indonesia, than to be stuck on Cocos. So Cocos will have to wait for another time.
Christmas Island in December has the spectacle of the yearly red crab migration. Millions of red crabs go down to the sea to release their eggs. Meanwhile, most of the roads are closed and even walking is sometimes difficult. I booked an upstairs room, but even so I had to remove a red crab which had lost its way.
Migration night at Flying Fish Cove
Meanwhile, apart from drinking a lot of duty free wine and enjoying typical Australian pub food, I spent my days diving. While the coral and fish are not as diverse as in Indonesia, there were some nice things to see. And a big Hammerhead Shark swam by, as usual too fast to take a photo…
